Kemberly Jul Luna (1989 – 2009): a victim of social injustice

Posted on

“…how are we to establish in this country, so long exploited by both foreign and native oppressors, a society of justice and peace, based on cordial cooperation among all social ranks and levels?” –Fr. Horacio de la Costa, S.J.

A distraught Kemberly Jul Luna thought that she’d find the answer among the cadres waging a protracted people’s war from the mountains.

Although still a communist/socialist at heart, I no longer support the local communist insurgency in this country. Actually, I never did because during my younger years, I was affiliated with the “rejectionists” or those who didn’t reaffirm to Maoist and Stalinist principles and strategies.

But in reaction to my statement above, I find Luna’s fate both appalling and sad:

Hers was a campus life spent mostly at late night parties and drinking sprees, waking up the next day with a nasty hangover. Still, she got good grades.

Kemberly Jul Luna’s binges seemed normal for someone studying at a state university, living alone but often surrounded by friends drawn by her natural charm and intelligence, who fondly called her “Kimay.”

The 21-year-old Kemberly, however, traded her little comforts for the cold and the unknown world in the mountains of Bukidnon. There, her small joys and miseries were easily swallowed up by the people’s wretchedness; it became easy for her to redeem herself from old habits that were slowly causing her decay.

She was doing well with the peasants of Bukidnón, her friends thought, until that fateful day when a bullet pierced her right breast and went through her nape in Sitio Bulacao, Barangay Concepción, City of Valencia. It was 10 days before Christmas.

Gun battle lasted for days

Army Maj. Michelle Anayrón, spokesperson of the 4th Infantry Division, said Kemberly was killed in an encounter with soldiers belonging to the 8th Infantry Battalion.

“The soldiers were on foot patrol when they chanced upon the NPA encampment,” Anayrón said. The gun battle, which started at 10 a.m., lasted for days, he added.

Kemberly died a member of the communist New People’s Army (NPA). She was Adriane, Joshua, or Ma’am Nurse to the people she had worked with in the highlands.

Her body, already rotting, was found dumped, along with seven other guerrillas, deep in the forest of Concepción, days after the Dec. 15 encounter.

Kemberly was an AB English student at Mindanáo State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) before she joined the communist movement in early 2009. Inquirer.net

What drove such a young and pretty lass to give up a life of comfort and beautiful promises to the brutality of the highlands? What right did these communist terrorists have to lure and mislead young lives to their doom? Why are there still disenchanted men and women in today’s supposedly civilized society? Is it a question of what social structure we should have?

If Karl Marx’s and Friedrich Engels’ theory of the inevitability of a popular revolution cannot be stopped, then let the natural turn of social events take its own damn course. There would be no need to wage a protracted (and hurried) “people’s war”, a war that not even a multitude or a majority of urban poor societies and laborers can fully grasp.

Our military and police pigs may be @$$h0le$, but that doesn’t make Sison’s NPA –or any armed revolutionary group– different from them.

Just because Maoism succeeded in China does it imply that the same strategies will easily apply here in our archipelago or elsewhere. For the nth time, our country is no longer a feudal society. It is apparent that, for almost a century, armed struggle is never the answer to Fr. de la Costa’s question. It has only taken thousands of lives (military, civilians, and liquidated comrades due to purging).

Be that as it may, it cannot be denied that a terrifying air of social injustice pervades all throughout the country for decades (just watch and listen to the plight of the urban poor contestants in Wowowee). And this kind of social condition demoralized young intellectuals such as Luna, compelling them to wage war against the authorities, all in the name of justice and, ultimately, lasting peace.

It’s not an enemy bullet that did Luna in — it’s social injustice’s fatal blow which snuffed her life out.

People fear the NPA, arms struggle in our country is an obsolete way for better life or good governance?..sorry I should have said, it’s not a way at ALL. We have regained our democracy by marching in Edsa…so what are you thinking about taking arms people.

Kids..go to school and comeback to your place and help..that’s a long-term solution!!

  7. When I was in college I was asked by a female classmate to attend an LFS meeting in our university. Even as I classify myself as an open-minded person and I stand by my principles, I kindly declined. I already know the background of the LFS as the student arm of the CPP and I don’t want to hear their lectures about how the government is corrupt and their ideology is the best possible solution. I really don’t believe in sacrificing young student lives by convincing them to take up arms against the government and join the NPA to fight our fellow filipino soldiers, who are just doing their job in order to put food in the table for their families. Students can be more helpful to our decaying society by finishing their studies and making their parents proud that after all the years of hardship the parents endure at last they saw the fruit of their labor.

She should have stayed in helping the poor thru community service, as far as I know, she was doing really well in community service and adored by the poor. It was cut short by the communist ideology that is nowhere to go.

To me she was a victim to her own passion, an untamed one. While passion is a necessary force to propel one do certain acts, there is no need to do it in arm struggle. Philippines has proven peaceful and bloodless revolutions works best for us.We will help ourselves become better person, then use our learnings to give back to the country. We cannot do a short-cut using violence. We should help government and we cannot critic it outside. If we have to take part in improvement and development,we must join in government and continue a good advocacy in the really corrupt world.

  10. Armed struggle may seemed not the right option for many of us and we tend to look at communism as a bankrupt ideology but we have overlooked on what ‘communism’ and ‘armed struggle’ means for them.

For someone like her who had witnessed so much injustice and poverty, we cannot blame her for taking up the cudgels of armed struggle for the oppressed people if she saw that there’s no other option to the change the plight of the people living there. She had seen the armed struggle as the ultimate cause that she should take so the poor and oppressed peoples can be liberated.

As for the author of this blog, I think you really don’t know what really lies behind ‘communism’ or ‘socialism’ per se.

    You have asked this question:

“What drove such a young and pretty lass to give up a life of comfort and beautiful promises to the brutality of the highlands? What right did these communist terrorists have to lure and mislead young lives to their doom? Why are there still disenchanted men and women in today’s supposedly civilized society? Is it a question of what social structure we should have?”

And I guess, you have answered your own question:

“Be that as it may, it cannot be denied that a terrifying air of social injustice pervades all throughout the country for decades (just watch and listen to the plight of the urban poor contestants in Wowowee). And this kind of social condition demoralized young intellectuals such as Luna, compelling them to wage war against the authorities, all in the name of justice and, ultimately, lasting peace.

It’s not an enemy bullet that did Luna in — it’s social injustice’s fatal blow which snuffed her life out.”

It is not because the NPA had been successful in brainwashing the young minds like Luna but it is because of the prevailing social conditions and her critical analysis of what’s happening in our country today that made her join the NPA.

I also believe it is wrong to waste one’s life for the armed struggle. But if it is the only option left for them, I highly salute them because it is not easy to give up the comforts of one’s life and fight for the people whom you don’t know and might not even care about you.

What we can offer them is sympathies, not condemnation. Because though they seem to disrupt the existing social order, this very social order is the one that compelled them to join the armed movement. And I truly believe that they’re not enemies because they have the same goals as ours: freedom from poverty.

“It is not because the NPA had been successful in brainwashing the young minds like Luna but it is because of the prevailing social conditions and her critical analysis of what’s happening in our country today that made her join the NPA.” — I couldn’t agree less, my friend.

“What we can offer them is sympathies, not condemnation.” — I fervently hope that you’re not implying that I’m condemning what happened to Luna. I don’t. I pity her lost cause. And I am greatly saddened for what had happened to her. It is so unjust and evil.

Right now, one might say that I have a two-faced stance toward Marxism. It has its good points. And it has its bad ones. But this ideology is something that didn’t grow up in me. It faded as the years went by. I merely consider it as part of growing up, as something that an intellectual and belligerent youth should experience. But it doesn’t really matter anymore because, like what I said, I’m no longer a Marxist.

Best regards and thanks for the response.

      • Hi Sir!

I know this is a long overdue response but nevertheless, I’ll proceed. 😀

From what I’ve read in some of your articles, it seems that you are disenchanted with what the ideology and what the Philippine Left is doing.

As you have said, you’re no longer a Marxist.

Because so far, I guess despite the errors made in the past, the ideology of the Philippine Left is much better than the status quo.

Besides, I guess capitalism got more than ‘errors’ in its closet than communism/socialism/marxism/maoism. The only difference is that capitalism’s errors are seen as more subtle. Take a look at how many people are living below poverty line, at how many children die from malnutrition, at how many people have died because of greed for power and wealth, at how many people end up losing everything while the rich and powerful gains more.

Take a look at how our planet is on the brink of destruction because of capitalists and their money-churning companies.

But I guess, it is not subtle after all because its errors are more far-reaching and destructive.

So as a youth who is inclined into believing the ideology of the Philippine left got the best solution that it offers to solve our problems, can you tell me what alternative course should the youth like me take?

        Thanks. 🙂

  12. She could have been our own daughter, sister or girlfriend. One more filipino life offered for brother filipinos– us. She offered it for those among us who have suffered. She with a motherly or big sisterly instinct was compelled to snatch her baby brothers away from the claws of predators and gather all back to the safety and comfort of our own home. But where is our own home?

Kimberly, like her given american name though a filipina, cannot find our own home for us filipinos though we are in a place called Filipinas. She took over the resistance of our elder male warriors like Ricarte, Luna and Torres Bugallón, against foreign invaders who invaded our nation in the 1900s. She gave the supreme honor to the sacrifices of our elders to give us our inheritance. They did not yet succeed. Until today, who still control our military, economy, politicians and our culture? Have we come home to the warmth of our own Home?

We have not! As Kimberly gave honor to our elder heroes, let us also give substance to our honor for her as we give substance to the sacrifices our mothers and fathers made to give us a home of our own.

  16. Nobody knows the truth of her death.
No one knows if she actually signed up for the NPA’s.
So please let’s leave all the theories as theories.

This world is cruel and even in forums, such cruelty exists.
We tend to bang each others principles but i hope we do it in a civilized way here.

First of all, our dearest friend is long gone and being able to point out the truth will no longer raise her back to life coz if it will, i could have done such efforts to do so.

Secondly, it wasn’t communism/political concerns that pushed her to think that way. There are several factors we need to consider before making a period on the issue. Family, peers, school, etc etc. We need to review on that as to how she was drowned with such strong will to give-up the life she had once.

So i ask everyone to please do not just say something conclusive at this point because you don’t know her. The way the news was portrayed was not all correct. Yes she drinks but that don’t mean NPA’s do not. I mean c’mon guys, stop making up scenarios just because you have these knowledge of social revolution and teenagers wasting their lives in parties etc etc.

    Let’s leave her in peace.

    Good bye dearest Kem.

The stupid would say she died because of a bankrupt ideology. But the enlightened mind would go beyond this moribund argument.

    One day
    the apolitical
    intellectuals
    of my country
    will be interrogated
    by the simplest
    of our people.

    They will be asked
    what they did
    when their nation died out
    slowly,
    like a sweet fire
    small and alone.

    No one will ask them
    about their dress,
    their long siestas
    after lunch,
no one will want to know
    about their sterile combats
    with “the idea
    of the nothing”
    no one will care about
    their higher financial learning.
    They won’t be questioned
    on Greek mythology,
    or regarding their self-disgust
    when someone within them
    begins to die
    the coward’s death.

    They’ll be asked nothing
    about their absurd
    justifications,
    born in the shadow
    of the total life.

    On that day
    the simple men will come.
    Those who had no place
    in the books and poems
    of the apolitical intellectuals,
    but daily delivered
    their bread and milk,
    their tortillas and eggs,
    those who drove their cars,
who cared for their dogs and gardens
    and worked for them,
    and they’ll ask:
“What did you do when the poor
    suffered, when tenderness
    and life
    burned out of them?”

    Apolitical intellectuals
    of my sweet country,
you will not be able to answer.

    A vulture of silence
    will eat your gut.
    Your own misery
    will pick at your soul.
And you will be mute in your shame.

The Communist has once again succeeded in brainwashing the young idealist students in MSU-IIT. Long before, this was always been a perennial problem.. Always, the communist victimize young students into accepting their rotten ideology. I say, “rotten” because it only led to more problems, chaos, poverty, misery and spiritual degeneration. Taking up arms was never been espoused by Christians and like many other religion. Only misguided people do believe its necessity just like the “Islamic Mujahideen” of Muslim followers and the Holy Crusaders..

Compared to Satan and the Angels paradox, Satan is always tempting humans to do the most easiest way of fixing things “quick fix”. Communism espouse bloody radical revolution to quick fix the problem of young society such us ours the Philippines. While the Angels always chose the rugged path of sublime patience in achieving victory. That no matter what, we have to stand together united fighting the problem that beset a developing nation (or die divided). Christ himself advocated this during his time.. Transparently, He had conquered Satan ways during his test. Kimberly Jul never followed a christian way. Thus, was fallen to Satan’s trapped.. She’s indeed a wasted christian…

As Filipinos we should strive to live and be able to support our love ones. The best we can do is to be good citizens of this country. As Filipino students the best we can do is make good in our studies, be a good child to our parents and follow the rules. When you graduate find a job, pay your taxes and be a law-abiding citizen. Leaving your studies behind and wasting the dreams that your parents and family have for you is not your job.
Communist rebels are not suppose to be called freedom fighters. The Philippines is already free. The war should have been over in 1945. The country should only have one armed forces. They keep calling the government a regime, since the Filipino people is the true government, then this a Filipino regime? We will never find peace and development if the problem in communism isn’t solve.
Communism must be stop and peace and unity should be upheld.

  30. Justified ang pagkamatay ni Kemai. Shame on those people who are speaking without thorough analysis. Bat kayo nag sasalita ng masama tungkol sa mga NPA. Have you known what their perspective are? Imbis na isipin niyong “masama ang mag rebelde”, mas mabuti sigurong isipin niyo muna “BAKIT sila nagrerebelde”. In the present regime, kahit sinong taong pinapatay dahil sa walang makain, wala ba siyang karapatan lumaban?

  37. The problem with most of the people na namumundok (this is not just about kimay), sa sobrang tagal na nila sa kabundukan hindi na nila alam ang nangyayari sa kapatagan. If you say na nakain na ng sistema ang mga tao sa gobyerno, hindi kaya ganon din ang nangyayari sa inyo. Ang lungkot lang kasi kinakailangan pa ba na magbuwis ng buhay? If we were educated and guided well, maiintindihan natin na marami pang peaceful ways na pwedeng gawin para makatulong sa mahihirap.
